PPC Group is advancing its strategic push into Southeast Europe’s renewable energy market by launching a major new project in Bulgaria after the construction started on a 165 MWp photovoltaic (PV) plant with integrated battery storage in Stara Zagora.
The new facility, named ”Colosseum” includes a co-located battery energy storage system (BESS) with a nominal output of 25 MW and an installed capacity of 55 MWh. The BESS is designed to support grid stability and ensure efficient energy distribution by storing excess generation and releasing it during peak demand.
Grid connectivity for the project will be secured through a dedicated 33/110 kV step-up substation built within the site perimeter, enabling seamless integration into Bulgaria’s national electricity system.
The plant will feature 260,000 bifacial PV modules, incorporating cutting-edge technology to enhance energy capture. The energy storage system will utilize advanced liquid-cooled LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries, known for their high efficiency, safety, and longevity.
Once operational, the facility is projected to generate over 265 GWh of clean electricity annually, enough to power more than 45,000 households. It is also expected to offset approximately 133,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year, further contributing to the region’s decarbonization goals.
