PPC solar park in Poland

PPC Group, Greece’s largest electricity utility, announced its entry into Poland through the acquisition of a 277.3 MW portfolio of wind and solar assets from local player EDP Renewables Polska.

For PPC, the acquisition represents a strategic expansion beyond its traditional markets in Southeastern Europe and forms part of a €24 billion investment programme running through 2030 that aims to almost double the company’s installed generation capacity.

According to the company, the acquisition supports its ambition to build an integrated renewable energy platform stretching from Greece to Central and Southeastern Europe, while diversifying both its geographical footprint and generation technologies.

Diversified portfolio combines operating assets with future growth

The transaction covers a balanced portfolio totaling 277.3 MW, combining operating renewable energy facilities with projects under development. The operating assets include 130.5 MW of wind capacity across three wind farms located in Iłża (54 MW), Tomaszów (46.5 MW) and Poturzyn (30 MW), with capacity factors reaching up to 33%.

The portfolio also includes 44.9 MW of operational solar parks in Pakosław (25.1 MW) and Recz (19.8 MW). These projects benefit from long-term fixed-price contracts that provide stable revenues during the first years of operation. An additional 101.9 MW consists of two solar developments expected to enter operation in 2029.

Cable pooling technology increases grid efficiency

A notable feature of the investment is the use of cable pooling, an increasingly important technology in Poland’s renewable energy sector. The future solar installations will share existing grid connections with nearby wind farms, allowing multiple renewable technologies to utilise the same transmission infrastructure.

The approach improves grid utilisation, reduces connection bottlenecks and creates operational synergies by combining complementary wind and solar generation profiles.

The model has become increasingly attractive following Poland’s introduction of dedicated cable pooling legislation in October 2023, which established a regulatory framework supporting more efficient use of electricity infrastructure.

Part of a broader €24 billion investment strategy

The Polish acquisition forms part of PPC Group’s wider strategic transformation. By 2030, the company aims to increase its installed generation capacity from 12.4 GW in 2025 to 24.3 GW, adding approximately 2.4 GW of new capacity annually, primarily through renewable energy, energy storage and flexible generation assets.

The strategy also significantly increases PPC’s international footprint. By the end of the decade, 45% of the Group’s installed capacity is expected to be located outside Greece, creating a geographically diversified energy portfolio spanning several European markets.
