Thessaloniki’s airport kept growing in the first five months of the year, with passenger traffic up 4% year on year at 2,822,717 travelers. The airport’s international segment was the main driver, while May brought only a mild slowdown in total traffic.

Domestic traffic rose 4.2% to 1,000,096 passengers in January-May, while international traffic increased 3.8% to 1,822,621. Aircraft movements also advanced, with total flights up 4.5% to 21,663. Domestic flights increased 2.9% in the period, while international flights rose 5.5%.

May saw a little dip

In May alone, total traffic came in at 729,490 passengers, down 0.6% from a year earlier. That decline came entirely from the domestic side, where traffic slipped to 203,417 passengers from 204,598 in May last year.

International traffic moved in the opposite direction, rising 3.6% to 526,073 passengers. Flight activity also improved, with movements up 3% to 5,608, as Fraport data shows.

Germany leads foreign demand

Germany remained Thessaloniki airport’s strongest foreign market in May, with 161,023 passengers. The United Kingdom followed with 60,255, while Italy, Cyprus and Poland also ranked among the top markets.

Other notable sources of traffic included the Netherlands, Austria, Turkey, Romania, Israel, Switzerland and Hungary, as the mix points to a broader and more diversified international network than in the past.

The Scandinavian countries also contributed meaningfully, with Sweden, Denmark and Finland together accounting for more than 18,000 passengers in May. Traffic from Serbia, Croatia and Slovakia also showed healthy activity.
