Lidl Greece is preparing its most ambitious expansion push yet, unveiling a €200 million investment program for 2026–2027 focused on network growth, logistics, technology and sustainability.
The plan includes five new stores in 2026, on top of a new outlet opening this year in Marousi. By the end of 2026, Lidl Greece’s network will reach 237 stores, up from 231 today. Renovations and expansions of existing units are also planned.
But the flagship project is a new 62,000 sq m distribution center in Elefsina, budgeted above €120 million and targeted for completion by 2029. The facility is expected to create 150–200 jobs. Lidl Greece currently operates five distribution centers nationwide.
Nationwide self-checkout rollout by 2027
A major upgrade to in-store experience is underway, with Lidl committing to install self-checkout systems in all stores by 2027. Today, 40 stores have self-checkout lanes, and another 130–140 will be added next year. On average, stores will feature six self-checkout lanes alongside three to five staffed checkouts, depending on store size and foot traffic.
Reshaping the famous ‘middle aisle’
Starting March 2026, Lidl Greece will redesign its well-known middle aisle, the section featuring non-food “bazaar” items such as tools, apparel, sports gear and kitchenware, as non-food goods remain a major revenue driver, with stores introducing 50–70 new SKUs every Monday and Thursday and five new SKUs every Saturday.
€527.6 million in exports to 31 countries
In 2024, Lidl Greece exports reached €527.6 million across 31 countries, covering 1,647 products from 268 suppliers. Exports fall into three categories: Eridanous themed-week products: €93.8 million, permanent assortment: €433.8 million, and fresh fruit & vegetables: €186 million (over 230,000 pallets shipped).
€1.07 billion GDP contribution in 2024
A recent socioeconomic impact study estimates Lidl Greece’s total contribution to Greek GDP at €1.07 billion in 2024, equal to 0.52% of national GDP, up from just 0.04% in 1999. The company supports 38,100 jobs across its value chain (0.73% of national employment).
